Harden's survey result
Summary
“As good as ever” – this modern and understated Soho wine bar favourite provides “good food, if in rather cramped and noisy surroundings”. A key feature is its handwritten ‘Black Book’ which lists the fine wines available each day.
Summary
“The food is one star turn” (the wine is the other) at this “small and spartan” Soho wine bar, frequented by wine-trade insiders. There’s an “interesting menu, short but imaginative”, with “beautiful combinations of textures and flavours that make a very special meal”. Ask the “knowledgeable front-of-house staff” for tips on the day’s handwritten ‘Black Book’ list of fine wines.
Summary
A “great (and ever-changing) range of fairly priced wines”, together with a handwritten ‘Black Book’ of fine wines at low mark-ups, make this “fun and friendly” – but also “crowded” and “noisy” – modern Soho wine bar a regular haunt for wine trade insiders. The food is also “great”, “reliably delicious, and avoids cliches”, which makes it an ideal spot to “enjoy a long, relaxed, indulgent lunch”. A number of fans caution though that “prices seem to be creeping higher…”

For 32 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"Food was tasty and portion size just about adequate given prices. Service warm & competent. Premises is desperately almost embarrassingly tatty tired shabby. 1 out of 5 for ambience is generous score given price point of food & drink. I would not return (we had lunch for 5 people yesterday) "
