“If you want a reliable weekend meal and some, mmmm, smooth funktastic jazz”, this Canary Wharf member of Ranald Macdonald’s Caledonian-themed group often comes recommended thanks to its “great live music entertainment”, “good-value set menus” and “decent roasts”. During the week, its menu of oysters, Scottish beef and other fairly traditional fare is nominated for an “excellent business lunch”.

“An evening out – in style” is oft-reported at the Docklands branch of Ranald Macdonald’s Belgravia haunt, dedicated to the high life with a Scottish twist – with whisky, cigars and nightly jazz and soul courtesy on occasion of house music patron Jools Holland. It also proved itself an “absolute stalwart as the go-to place for those still going to the office through lockdown”. Top Tip: “the haggis pizza is a must!”.

“For a total dining experience, night out, or even Saturday BBQ”, fans of the “spacious-yet-intimate” E14 spin-off from Ranald Macdonald’s well-known Belgravian applaud its “eclectic brilliance”, and cigar-lovers particularly enjoy the “wonderful humidor and private smoking balcony”. The cuisine can seem “expensive for what it is”, but even some critics acknowledge: “you don’t really go for the food – the entertainment is top-notch, and the great selection of spirits helps dampen any pain from the bill”.

For 32 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

Owner's description

Boisdale of Canary Wharf is a critically acclaimed British restaurant providing an eclectic environment in which to celebrate the very best of Britain's heritage through food and drink as well as to enjoy live music, one of the world's leading whisky collections and exceptional wine list including own bottled wine and vintage champagnes.

The second floor restaurant and live music venue presents jazz, blues and soul throughout the week, from light instrumental acts on Mondays and Tuesdays to sell out blockbusters at weekends and relaxing easy listening on Sunday afternoons.
