Harden's says
Closed in January 2020 after 95 years, Pompadour has now been given a new lease of life, at the hands of Dean Banks, MasterChef: The Professionals finalist and most recently chef at Haar.
Harden's survey result
Summary
“A superb location, where the chef's culinary skills are effectively displayed” – Dean Banks is succeeding where others have failed in this plush and “romantic” dining room, dating from 1925. Culinarily speaking, it’s in a similar ambitious vein to his St Andrews venture, Haar, and even a reporter who thought it is “maybe a bit pricey” concludes that “the quality of food and the high standards effectively make this a no-brainer to visit”.
Summary
Chef Dean Banks is the latest name to take the reins of this august and spacious dining room, first opened in 1925 – about 20 years after the grand hotel that contains it – and run in recent years by The Galvin brothers (and then briefly by Dan Ashmore). At dinner (lunch is simpler), it presents two tasting menus for £85 and £125 per head in a similar culinary vein to his St Andrews venture, Haar (see also).
Summary
“The ambience is one to savour for a special occasion” at this pretty and romantic chamber: long one of the city’s landmark dining rooms. Just as our survey was underway, in spring 2019, the Galvin brothers severed their ties with it, but chef Dan Ashmore remains at the stoves, so we’ve maintained its high ratings on our bet that this will be a case of ‘plus ça change’. Choose between a three-course à la carte selection for £55, or a seven-course mystery tasting menu at £70.
For 32 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
