The “incredible tastes” created by chef Patrick Withington make this “unpretentious place with a modern interior”, “a wonderful find in a rejuvenated and restored Victorian street in Ancoats”“I could eat here every day”. The “light dishes designed for sharing” are “served by enthusiastic staff who clearly love the food”, while the “interesting” list of natural wines is “curated by people who really have a passion for their work and know what they are doing”.

Ultra-minimalist in interior design, menu and cooking style – this Ancoats three-year-old from chef Patrick Withington and manager William Sutton (who worked together at Levenshulme’s Trove sourdough bakery) earns nothing but the very highest praise for its stripped-down sharing plates and natural wines. The Observer’s Jay Rayner was one such convert, ordering and eating all nine items on the menu and declaring it one of his “meals of the year”“elegant, sophisticated, but with substance underpinning the gloss and shimmer (… see how good it is? It’s forced me to type utter blathering, enthusiastic bollocks!)”.

For 32 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"Food wasn’t as good or as interesting as previously. Maybe we got them on a bad day but that doesn’t explain the crazy decision to stop doing the wonderful roast potatoes! Why take the best dish off the menu?"
