Now moved from 10 Heddon Street to a permanent St James's site.
Harden's survey result
Summary
“Love the vibey new location even though it’s big” – in late 2021, Jack Croft and Will Murray moved from 10 Heddon Street (where their original 12 weeks residency lasted over a year) to this “stylish” new 150-cover site in St James’s, incorporating a bar, terrace and chef’s counter. One or two diners dismiss the new version as “nothing special”, but most accounts are full-on raves for the sharing-styles plates, originating from the UK and their Esher smallholding: “this has to be future of restaurants – sensational food, sustainably sourced, creatively used… magic!”
Summary
“Classy and talented cooking, with a sustainable bent (that doesn’t overshadow enjoyment)” has made a smash hit out of Jack Croft and Will Murray’s extended residency at this well-known site, off Regent Street, which has previously been the launch pad for a series of impressive extended pop-ups (Leach & Carter, Pacific). Despite opening at a tricky time (they took over here in autumn 2020) it inspires tons of favourable reports, lauding its “incredible small plates” (“triumphant corn ribs”, “rich and moreish mushroom parfait”, with “cod’s head as a particular favourite”). The contemporary interior is stylish enough, but in good weather head for the terrace.
Summary
In Crown Estates’s little restaurant enclave, just off Regent Street, the site that was Magpie (RIP) was relaunched in summer 2019 under an ‘agile approach’ that envisages ‘the ability to invite more creative partners on a short-term basis to add fresh, exciting ideas to London’s dining scene’. We think that may mean a series of pop-ups. First up: Chris Leach (Pitt Cue, Kitty Fishers et al) and David Carter (of Smokestak), whose menu will feature various hand-made salumi and hand-rolled pasta dishes.

For 32 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

Fallow St James's Restaurant Diner Reviews
"A second visit, a week after the first is indicative of the quality of this restaurant. Every dish was cooked perfectly. Dishes were all balanced, and seasoned very well. Menu is well written, composed by clearly very competent chefs. Service was good, a slight confusion at the start with our reserved table being taken, but very friendly and professional once seated to the end. Water was always topped up, and plates cleared promptly after finishing. Price is reasonable for the location and quality of food. Restaurant a tad noisy, but had a nice bustling feel to it, working with the theme of a more casual fine dining restaurant. Overall a great restaurant, and a restaurant I would return to many times. "
"Went on a Monday afternoon. Restaurant was surprisingly busy, indicative of how good this restaurant is. Food was creative, yet still familiar. Cooking was of a high standard, seasoning was perfect on every dish. The restaurant itself is quite loud with the open kitchen, but that makes it feel quite lively, in line with the food served. Service was very good, very attentive and friendly. Our server was eager to make a connection from the start, recommending dishes with confident and passionate explanations. Service quality dipped very slightly near the end, water glasses running empty, and taking a while to get the bill. All in all, a very good restaurant, pricey, but well worth it for the food quality."
"Very good all round restaurant. "
"With a table at the chef’s counter, it’s fascinating watching the workings of the kitchen backed up with great, knowledgeable service. We broke our rule of not going to the same place twice as we enjoyed it so much."
