The “cooking is as reliable as ever” at this calm and sprawling Islington institution – a fixture among the antiques shops of Camden Passage for more than half a century. Its modern European cuisine is “nothing wildly exciting, but assured and confident” and backed up by an “excellent wine list”. Staff are “especially good to regulars” (“it’s so nice to be recognised, welcomed and made to feel special”). And “when sitting in the quiet and civilised garden in the sunshine, it’s hard to believe you’re only moments from the fray of Upper Street”.

“Celebrating over 50 years in Camden Passage”, this cutely located “institution” is “an established Islington staple”, and a default choice for business, romance and family celebrations for fans across north London, for whom it’s a massive “favourite”. The modern European cuisine “continues to innovate” and if results are arguably “unspectacular”, they are very “reliable”, while the spacious interior and “excellent outdoor seating” create an “impressive environment” that helps imbue a meal with a good sense of occasion.

“Tucked away in Camden Passage”, this Islington institution is “still going strong after all these years” and remains a real “go-to place for family celebrations” for many north Londoners; as well as “a great place for a romantic dinner”. “The ordinary fascia hides a true gem inside”, leading onto “a modern, spacious and stylish interior” where the top seats are in the “lovely, light and airy back area”. It’s not a foodie kind of place, but the cooking is “contemporary and varied (the set menu never disappoints)”, and “staff are par excellence, always professional, but fun and cheery”.

For 32 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"Delightful staff, spacious light conservatory, food not exotic but done very well. Feels like an outing going there. Good for special occasions or à deluxe. Great for parties"
