“The magnificent and historic, late-Victorian dining room makes for a truly stunning backdrop to any meal” at this “beautifully renovated” chamber: the main dining room of the monumental hotel (originally Hotel Russell) that dominates the north of Russell Square. Critics say the space is “the star of the show”, feeling that the cuisine from the newly installed Galvin Brothers regime “fails to live up to it”; but taken overall, ratings for its “menu of British grill favourites” are good. Top Tip – “a very good family Sunday lunch option”.

For 32 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"A fun venue. It can be crowded and often full of tourists and people staying at the hotel. Good oysters."

"Housed in an absolutely beautiful building with sumptuous decoration and plenty of space the ambience and the service are almost faultless. We went for lunch and chose the set menu which was reasonably priced. However apart from the starter (steak tartare with sourdough toast) which was delicious the remaining main course and pudding (sticky toffee pudding, which was dry and felt like it had been reheated in the microwave for too long) were underwhelming. Shame as have been to La Chapelle and never been disappointed "
