Harden's survey result
Summary
“The best scotch eggs in London!” are a renowned attraction at this “lovely” boozer in the backstreets of deepest Fulham, whose food aristocracy backers include the Ledbury’s Brett Graham, as well as game expert Mike Robinson. On the back of its “excellent and robust” cooking – particularly “perfect game” – it is again voted London’s No. 1 pub in our annual diners’ poll but, unsurprisingly “trying to get a table takes some planning: it’s not a pub you can pop into if the mood takes you, especially when Chelsea are playing at home”. It’s also the case that service has been “a bit mixed” in recent times and that the cuisine – “though still pretty good, feels like it isn’t quite at the standard it was when Sally Abé was in charge of the kitchen”.
Summary
“Unbeatable in the gastropub category” – this characterful Fulham backstreet boozer is “still exceptional even though Sally Abé has left” and, yet again, was voted London’s No. 1 pub in our annual diners’ survey. Specialising in game, its “traditional” menu is “more elevated than is usual for pub fayre” and “cooked with flair and enthusiasm”. The place still looks like a pub though, and they do a mean Scotch egg – it’s the “gastropub experience at its best!”. (In September 2021, Jake Leach was inaugurated as the new head chef).
Summary
“Fabulous game” is a highpoint of the “simple food, cooked to perfection” (“mouthwatering meat so tender the knife just fell through it”) at this “super-fine” hostelry in the distant backstreets of Fulham – for the second year, the survey’s No. 1 gastropub. Full credit goes to head chef Sally Abé for her “top flight” evolution of traditional dishes, but it can’t harm to have input from backers who include Brett Graham (of the currently defunct Ledbury), and also the UK’s most prominent game chef, Mike Robinson. Aside from the small amount of space dedicated purely to drinking, it feels like an honest-to-goodness, fairly unreformed boozer. Top Menu Tips – “venison scotch egg is to die for, as is the Sunday roast”.

For 32 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"Good gastropub experience but too expensive for what is in offer, especially the wine list, and as to pricing everything net of VAT, well really."
