International Restaurants in Manchester
1. Six by Nico
International restaurant in Manchester
60 Spring Gardens - M2
“Such amazing value for a six-course, themed, tasting menu” that changes every six weeks – that’s the USP of Nico Simeone’s national chain, which, over five years, has grown from its Glasgow base to number nine in total (with London having two: in Fitzrovia and Canary Wharf). Of course it’s “slightly gimmicky”, but on the whole it’s “a good effort at a budget experience”: “you get what you pay for, and while not all dishes hit the mark, and service can be a bit hit ’n’ miss (particularly at busy times), it is innovative, has a great buzz and is a lot of fun”.
2. Mackie Mayor
International restaurant in Manchester
1 Eagle Street - M4
“A great street food experience, with wines and beers to match” – Smithfield's Grade II Listed 1858 market has been refurbished and reimagined as a food hall by the folk behind Altrincham Market; ten food and drink stalls serve up a range of interesting fare, and there are over 500 seats.
3. Escape to Freight Island
International restaurant in Manchester
Baring Street - M1
This vast street-food and entertainment concept accommodating up 1,000 visitors in an old freight depot by Piccadilly station is simply “another world” – “a mind-blowing-sized venue and organisation” where “the food is not really the main attraction” – although there is plenty of sufficient quality to earn high ratings, from 15 different restaurants and bars in an “eclectic mix” that ranges from Voodoo Rays pizza, Brad Carter’s One Stop Döner Bar and asador grills from Baratxuri to tacos from Madre.
4. Altrincham Market
International restaurant in Altrincham
Greenwood Street - WA14
Nick Johnson’s “wonderfully vibrant” transformation of a covered Victorian market into an artisan food hall has a “great atmosphere”, and the “mix of food from different suppliers means that in a group, everyone has something they want to eat”. “The novelty has gone but it’s still holding up standards” – although “queues are too long” and it can be “a battle to get a table”.
5. Sigiriya
International restaurant in Hale
173 Ashley Road - WA15
“My Sri Lankan colleague rates it as the closest thing he’s found to his mum’s cooking!” – Don Buddhika’s local restaurant has brought some unusually authentic cooking to this chichi Manchester ’burb.
