Jon & Fernanda's
British, Modern restaurant in Auchterarder
34 High Street - PH3
“Any trip to Scotland and in particular Gleneagles would not be complete without dinner at Jon & Fernanda’s!” – so say fans of this “great find” near the famous resort, whose “friendly and welcoming” style helps make it “a firm favourite” for those who have discovered it over the last 22 years. The “locally sourced” à la carte menu is an accomplished but relatively down-to-earth antidote to the fancier fare found down the road: “it is so hard to choose from, with so many stunning dishes and wonderful presentation”.
3.
Strathearn Restaurant
French restaurant in Auchterarder
This famous resort’s traditional fine-dining venue (as opposed to the more avant-garde Restaurant Andrew Fairlie, along the corridor) is “a wonderful throwback to a bygone age of elegance and sophistication” – “complete with live pianist”, silver service and a trolley bearing the roast of the day, beef Wellington and Dover sole. “Despite all this, the ambience is not stuffy”, and the culinary skills on display are thoroughly “modern”.
4.
Andrew Fairlie, Gleneagles Hotel
French restaurant in Auchterarder
“Andrew Fairlie may no longer be with us but his spirit lives on in this restaurant which bears his name” – the “elegant” flagship dining room of this world-renowned golf resort, which this year topped our annual diners’ poll as No.1 in our Top 100 Best UK Restaurants. “And it still maintains its high standards and coveted 2 Michelin stars, which are well deserved”. Chef Stephen McLaughlin and GM Dale Dewsbury have been on the team since 2001, and the former provides both an à la carte or 7-course tasting menu: seasonal, luxurious ingredients are prepared with impeccable skill and creativity to deliver a spoiling experience that’s “well worth the money and a memory to be treasured”. “Attentive” staff, who are “especially knowledgeable in all respects” are also often mentioned.
5.
Nairns Bridge of Allan
Scottish restaurant in Bridge of Allan
Henderson Street - FK9
Celeb chef Nick Nairn and wife Julia had only been open for a year or so at this all-day bistro/café before, in August 2021, it was struck by fire in the middle of Saturday evening’s service and staff had to evacuate diners before it was engulfed by flames. It is due to re-open towards the end of 2022 or the beginning of 2023, with a new chef (Stephen Crawford); new kitchen; and new look (“light, airy and bright – contemporary Scottish”).
