1. La Locanda
Italian restaurant in Gisburn
Main Street - BB7
“Think of La Locanda as small agriturismo restaurant somewhere rural in the northern half of Italy, but which has somehow materialised in a weaver’s cottage in the Ribble Valley, on the main E-W route of the A59, and you’ll get an idea of what the Bocchis are about. Maurizio cooks; Cinzia serves (loudly). Fresh produce in virtually all dishes is locally sourced, the meats usually from a local organic farm a couple of miles away. Drinks are resolutely Italian. Don’t ask for Coke: they don’t have it, but they have a couple of Italian colas, among the intriguing soft drinks list. The same goes for the lengthy beer list, and the oenophiliac delight that is the wine list. What a wine list. Wines I have never seen anywhere else in this country, and in all the years I’ve been going to La Locanda, not a single disappointing wine. While the wine list explores every corner of Italy, the food, or at least the cooking, tends to focus more on the rustic styles of the north, particularly Lombardy and Piedmont. It's important to note that there is no pizza and there is definitely no garlic bread: this is an Italian Italian, not a Britalian. Cinzia runs front of house: some find her a bit abrupt, but she really isn’t: the problem is that she speaks Italian using English words”.
2. The Angel
British, Modern restaurant in Hetton
“A stark – and welcome – makeover from the Angel in its previous very traditional guise” has helped Michael Wignall put his stamp on this famous northern inn: often cited as the UK’s original country gastropub, which he purchased in 2018. “Having enjoyed Michael Wignall's cooking at his former outpost, The Latymer, we were interested to see how it might translate to North Yorkshire: very well, we thought, with no lack of sophistication and ambition, but losing any of the possible pretension expected in a Surrey hotel”. “Thank heavens! He’s a great chef who does not insist you eat what he chooses, but who offers a choice of dishes, all of which tempt and intrigue”: “really exceptional food”. If you stay over, “the breakfast is a joyous surprise” too.
3. The Devonshire Fell Hotel
British, Modern restaurant in Skipton
Burnsall Village - BD23
A “superb location” in the heart of the Dales is a key feature at this handsome-looking hotel, whose dining room has gorgeous views over the surrounding countryside. Limited but good feedback, too, on the affordable cuisine (two courses for £37.50, three courses for £45 as we went to press).
4. The Burlington at The Devonshire Arms Hotel and Spa
British, Traditional restaurant in Skipton
Bolton Abbey - BD23
The Duke of Devonshire’s Bolton Abbey estate in Yorkshire provides a “stunning setting” for this “traditional, French-inspired” dining room, within a well-known luxury hotel. Ratings are very good all-round for Chris O’Callaghan’s cuisine, which is bolstered by an “open-plan wine cellar the staff will be happy to show you round” (look out for some famous vintages). Top Tip – “one of Yorkshire’s top afternoon teas”.
5. The Box Tree
French restaurant in Ilkley
35-37 Church St - LS29
“Well worth the trek while on a trip ‘up North’”, noted a Wimbledon-based reporter on this esteemed and “always enjoyable” foodie destination. Set in one of the town’s oldest buildings, it first became a restaurant in 1962 and was cradle to the talents of the young Marco Pierre White prior to its last 19 years of ownership by chef Simon Gueller and his wife Rena. There’s a three-course menu at lunch – dinner is 6 courses plus canapés, amuse-bouche and bread – and fans say the kitchen “absolutely nails it”.
6. Bettys
Sandwiches, cakes, etc restaurant in Ilkley
32 The Grove - LS29
“Afternoon tea IS Bettys!". This old-fashioned tearoom is “always worth the queue” for its epic teas and fine spreads of pastries and sarnies. It’s also “a great place to meet over a very good breakfast. Coffee, understandably, is excellent!”
7. The Plough Inn at Wigglesworth
British, Modern restaurant in Skipton
Jack Lane, Wigglesworth - BD23
8. White Swan at Fence
British, Modern restaurant in Fence
300 Wheatley Lane Rd - BB12
“Every dish is sublime” – “a real joy” – at this “unpretentious pub” near Burnley with “fantastic cooking” from “brilliant” chef Tom Parker, who “learned his craft at local Northcote and now has a diary released three months at a time”. “It’s a one-hit menu each day depending on seasonality and his mood” – “not exclusively fish but the fish dishes are superb”. The whole operation, including co-owners Gareth & Laura Ostick, is “very clever” and represents “excellent value” – “it’s not really cheap, but much much cheaper than similar establishments of this class”.
9. Aagrah
Indian restaurant in Shipley
4 Saltaire Rd - BD18
Mohammed Sabir was still working as a bus driver in Shipley when he launched his Kashmiri curry business as a mobile takeaway from his Commer van, the ‘Spice Box’ in 1976. The next year he opened his first bricks-and-mortar restaurant Aagrah, which still wins consistently solid marks for its food and has nine branches across Yorkshire.
10. Buon Apps
Italian restaurant in Otley
Hartley House, 50 Mill Way - LS21
“With its attentive staff and lovely setting by the river”, Alessandro & Sofia Elena Tocca’s “wonderful Italian restaurant” draws an appreciative crowd and is “a favourite of many locals”. One of Wharfedale’s most consistent performers for two decades, it has blossomed since moving into an old weir-side mill five years ago.
11. Bistrot Pierre
restaurant in Ilkley
The Crescent, Brook Street - LS29
“Always reliable for tasty and reasonably priced French food”, this handy venue is one of twenty remaining branches of a national chain launched 29 years ago (six more closed down in 2020).
