3. The Bulls Head
British, Modern restaurant in Holymoorside
New Road - S42
Chef/Patron Mark Aisthorpe personally hunts for some of the ingredients served at his “lovely Peak District pub”, which features game alongside “a nice line in local steaks” as part of his “wonderful” cooking – “high-end cuisine that deserves wider recognition” according to fans, with the option of a tasting menu alongside the à la carte and bar menu. One repeated gripe, though – the “front of house needs the same amount of attention as the food”.
4. The Tickled Trout
Fish & seafood restaurant in Dronfield
33 Valley Road - S18
‘Deliciously Derbyshire’ is the motto at this Peak District gastropub – feedback is too limited for a rating, but such as we have gives the thumbs-up to high-quality pub grub, which includes a wide variety of sourdough pizzas.

6. Vero Gusto
Italian restaurant in Sheffield
12 Norfolk Row - S1
A charming “family-run” operation, which after 16 years is “now a Sheffield institution”. Neapolitan-born Ester’s “delicious” dishes are backed up by Saverano’s “mind-boggling wine listed topped by super-Tuscans”, while “there’s a small bar for pre-dinner drinks”. Top Menu Tip – “sublime ravioli”.
7. Street Food Chef
Mexican restaurant in Sheffield
90 Arundel St - S1
Richard & Abi Golland’s street-food operation wins high ratings for its tacos and other lively Latino dishes, available at its city-centre Burrito Bar or the fully licensed Mexican Canteen in Sharrow Vale Road.
8. Joro
Scandinavian restaurant in Sheffield
294 Shalesmoor - S3
“World-class cooking” – “a blisteringly good fusion of Nordic, Japanese and modern British ingredients and techniques” – continues to win ever-more renown for Luke & Stacey Sherwood-French’s “brilliant and imaginative” venue, in a “slightly cramped” converted shipping container (but see note below) “with a great playlist of music that you wouldn’t normally hear in a fine-dining restaurant!”. “It’s a travesty that this place hasn’t been awarded a Michelin star, as it’s definitely operating at that level and restaurants less deserving are awarded one (one guesses that the shipping container location has put off the traditionalist tyre men)”. “A light touch and high-end technique in the kitchen make unusual combinations feel natural” – “every dish is a flavour bomb!” – while “inventive drinks flights showcase some bold pairings”. Watch this space, as a move is afoot to a new location in late 2022/early 2023, and the couple are also expanding their local empire (which includes House of Jöro, see also) with a new deli concept: Grocerant.
9. Rafters
British, Modern restaurant in Sheffield
220 Oakbrook Rd, Nethergreen - S11
“Still one of the best, with great service (and also good for special events)” – Tom Lawson & Alastair Myers’s small (26-seater) dining room in Nethergreen is ever-more focused on its tasting menu format, delivering 6 courses for £95. There’s also the option of eating at the ‘Kitchen Bench’.
10. Fischer’s at Baslow Hall
British, Modern restaurant in Baslow
Calver Rd - DE45
“Fischers is almost a by-word for elegant country-house dining in the Peak District” – “the food is creative and tasty”, and “a really attentive team looks after you”. “The setting is hugely impressive”, too: “a grand house that still feels warm and friendly”, a short drive from the even more impressive Chatsworth. Top Menu Tip – “they have a fantastic pastry chef” – so leave room for pudding.
11. Piedaniels
French restaurant in Bakewell
Bath St - DE45
“A good standard is maintained” at Eric & Christiana Piedaniel’s Gallic venture of over 25 years’ standing – a smartly decorated and comfortable venue, which inhabits a high-ceilinged, characterful oak-beamed room and which serves traditional French cuisine that’s “good value”.
12. The Peacock at Rowsley
British, Modern restaurant in Rowsley
Bakewell Rd - DE4
An “old manor house hotel with fabulous food”, in the Peak District National Park close to Chatsworth, that has “a slightly old-fashioned feel – i.e. American tourists would love it”. The dining room can seem on the “formal” side, but dishes are “really excellent”. Top Menu Tip – “dessert, a raspberry financier with an apricot and cream, was bloody lovely – couldn’t be improved”.
13. The Pearl at Park Hill
restaurant in Park Hill
8 Pat Midgley Lane - S2
Opened in August 2023, this spacious venue from the duo behind Sheffield bar-restaurant Bench is the latest addition in the renewal of the city's famous Park Hill modernist development, Europe's largest listed building. Cocktails, craft beer and natural wines will be on offer alongside pintxos-style snacks showcasing top-class suppliers.
14. Native
Fish & seafood restaurant in Neepsend
169 Gibraltar Street - S3
This “excellent seafood restaurant” was opened in 2021 by “top Sheffield fishmonger J H Mann” – an institution that opened a century earlier in Hillsborough. “Being run by a fishmonger means they have varieties way more exciting that the usual offerings, including lobster, oysters and scallops” – which means it’s “a wonderful place for fish lovers”. The retail part of the business is now based in Sharrow Vale, with a second shop in Bakewell.
15. Tonco
British, Modern restaurant in Sheffield
2 Dyson Place - S11
Flo Hiller and Joe Shrewsbury opened this modern and minimalist small-plates restaurant in late 2019, since which time it’s made waves locally in the local press (if not our annual diners’ survey). In April 2022, it caught the eye of Marina O’Loughlin in The Sunday Times, who gives it a full-on rave: in the city’s “coolest, restaurant-lined neighbourhood” she finds it “warmly ramshackle… as far from fancy as it’s possible to get”. The menu is “a box of delights” that “fairly jitters with promise” with a “maverick touch” that pairs mussels with rhubarb and “ajo blanco (Spanish-style almond and garlic ‘soup’)”… “sounds like madness, tastes like genius”.
16. Bench
British, Modern restaurant in Nether Edge
7b Nether Edge Road - S7
“Nice, if somewhat out-of-the-way, neighbourhood-style spot serving small plates and good wine”, outside Sheffield – a bar / kitchen and shop that started life with sell-out pop-up dinners. Its cuisine was given a strong plug by The FT in early 2022.
17. The Blind Bull
British, Modern restaurant in Little Hucklow
“Great renovation of an ancient inn, successfully brought back from dereliction” – this twelfth-century Peak District building is said to be the fifth-oldest pub in the country. It’s “excellent at every level”, serving “really good food” mostly sourced from within 10 miles, while the “newly added rooms look fantastic and will undoubtedly make this a destination”.
18. Restaurant Lovage by Lee Smith
British, Modern restaurant in Bakewell
Bath Street - DE45
“Delightful food”, “prepared with love and care”, is on Derbyshire-born chef Lee Smith’s menu at the crowdfunded restaurant he opened three years ago, having quit as head chef at Michelin-starred Samphire on Jersey. There’s a “lovely ambience” in the cleverly modernised historic building, and everything tastes “fresh and delicious”.
