Indian Restaurants in City
1. Copper Chimney
Indian restaurant in Shepherd's Bush
Southern Terrace, Westfield London, Ariel Way - W12
With 15 restaurants in five Indian cities, this long-established Indian chain (est 1972 in Mumbai) chose Westfield (near the main entrance) for its first UK branch, which opened a couple of years ago. We still don’t get a huge volume of reports, but all are upbeat, especially from those with kids in tow: “authentic, fairly priced, and with something for the whole family to enjoy”.
2. Potli
Indian restaurant in Hammersmith
319-321 King St - W6
“Every dish tastes different with wonderful, rich depths of flavour” at this “interesting street-food-style” café on Hammersmith’s ‘restaurant row’ near Ravenscourt Park: “both north and south India are covered” on a “great, regional menu”, incorporating “delicious vegetarian options”: “the wide range favours going with a big group, or ordering lots to have at home afterwards!”
3. Light of India
Indian restaurant in Kensington and Chelsea
67/69 Gloucester Road - SW7
Located at the heart of Kensington and Chelsea,The Light of India restaurant is a classy and elegant Indian restaurant established in 1984. Our culinary philosophy is deceptively simple. We celebrate the ver...
4. The Cinnamon Club
Indian restaurant in Westminster
Old Westminster Library, Great Smith St - SW1
“The atmospheric book-lined walls of Westminster’s former public library are a highlight” and add “a lot of character” to Vivek Singh’s famous venue a short stroll from the Palace of Westminster: one of the Top 40 most-mentioned restaurants in our annual diners’ poll and the best-known top Indian destination. “It’s worth a visit just for the bar!” – where an evening often commences – but the prime attraction is “clever”, “high-end” nouvelle Indian food “that’s truly different” and with “very delicate spicing”. “The huge area can make service a challenge” but generally staff cope well.
5. Cilantro Putney
Indian restaurant in Wandsworth
244 Upper Richmond Road - SW15
Our StoryFor a long time now, we’ve observed foodies and non-foodies alike being somewhat ambivalent about fantastically popular Indian takeaway and restaurant food – not because they don’t ...
6. Benares
Indian restaurant in Mayfair
12a Berkeley Square House, - W1
Sameer Taneja’s “exceptional” cuisine continues to maintain the high standing of this well-known Berkeley Square destination. Despite the odd “unexciting” report, most accounts are of “fabulous” meals from “a menu that’s very spice-led and refined-tasting”. Located on the first floor, its modern design “doesn’t feel too ‘posh Mayfair’ in ambience terms”, with meals here said to be “well-paced” and “refreshing”.
7. Cinnamon Bazaar
Indian restaurant in
28 Maiden Lane - WC2E
The “gorgeous food, with amazing flavours and presentation” at this Covent Garden café matches the high standards Vivek Singh sets at his grander Cinnamon restaurants, some of the best-known Indian kitchens in London. It’s a useful destination pre-theatre.
8. Rangrez
Indian restaurant in
32 Fulham Palace Road - W6
Limited but good all-round feedback on this family-run Punjabi stalwart, which has long been a feature of the restaurant strip just to the south of Hammersmith’s Eventim Apollo (and which sometimes only serves a restricted menu in the early evening during events there). It also has a branch in Ealing (not listed).
9. Cinnamon Kitchen
Indian restaurant in City
9 Devonshire Sq - EC2
“Big flavoured, modern Indian dishes” from an “interesting and different menu” win praise for Vivek Singh’s high quality duo: “a more affordable introduction to the Cinnamon Club’s cuisine”. The newer SW11 branch, “with service around an open kitchen in a lively railway arch” near Battersea Power Station is jollier than its longer-established City sibling, where “the décor is quite boring and service a tad patchy” (although the latter is also “pretty decent value in an area that has limited options for a weekend lunch”).
10. Pure Indian Cooking
Indian restaurant in Fulham
67 Fulham High Street - SW6
“A real gem”, serving “top-quality modern Indian cooking at sensible prices” on Fulham High Street near Putney Bridge. The “delicious, unusual food” comes courtesy of chef-owner Shilpa Dandekar, who trained with both India’s Taj Group and Raymond Blanc. She and her husband Faheem Vanoo, who runs the front of house, have made a good impression on locals (“it’s run by really nice people”).
11. Babur
Indian restaurant in Forest Hill
119 Brockley Rise - SE23
“The deft flavours of fine Indian dining” at this “Honor Oak stalwart” have induced discerning diners to “make the awkward trip” to SE23 for almost 40 years now. “The place maintains its standards” and has a credible claim on being “the best Indian in southeast London” thanks to its “exciting” dishes, “excellent” service and “elegant” interior.
12. Brigadiers
Indian restaurant in City
Bloomberg Arcade, Queen Victoria Street - EC2R
“One of the sheer tastiest places to eat in town” – JKS Restaurants’ highly popular outpost in Bloomberg Arcade continues to inspire raves for its “delicious and different” Indian cuisine (very much “not your traditional curry house”). The large interior, with its many bars and TV screens, is more divisive: it’s “awesome” for its core clientele, but “the ambience screams ‘City Boys’ (especially when there’s sport on)”. Top Menu Tip – “Indo-Chinese chilli paneer lettuce cups… so many tastes at the same time!”
13. temper City
BBQ restaurant in City
Angel Court - EC2R
“Sitting at the counter with all of its theatre is amazing” at Neil Rankin’s “noisy, buzzy and fun” outlets, whose “really cool (well, hot) feature are the ‘fire pit’ cooking stations”, from which they offer “a great mix of meat dishes” (including rare-breed steaks), plus fish options. There were some “off days” reported this year, though: in particular, service has sometimes been “under pressure” or even “shambolic”.
14. Gunpowder
Indian restaurant in City
11 Whites Row - E1
“Tops for combining punchy tastes and value”: this Indian street-food trio – in Spitalfields, near Tower Bridge, and – since late 2021 – now in Soho too – offers a “distinct” and “modern spin” on Indian cuisine. Although the plates are small, “it’s amazing how they deliver such big flavours”.
15. Gunpowder
Indian restaurant in Southwark
One Tower Bridge, 4 Crown Square - SE1
“Tops for combining punchy tastes and value”: this Indian street-food trio – in Spitalfields, near Tower Bridge, and – since late 2021 – now in Soho too – offers a “distinct” and “modern spin” on Indian cuisine. Although the plates are small, “it’s amazing how they deliver such big flavours”.
16. Dishoom
Indian restaurant in Shoreditch
7 Boundary St - E2
“I have yet to find the person who does not absolutely love Dishoom!” – Shamil and Kavi Thakrar’s “must-visit chain” remains our poll’s most-commented-on group, on the strength of its “exceptional” homage to the Irani cafés of Bombay. “A sense of nostalgia for a vanished India and quirky colonial notices add to the fun” of its “cool”, “evocative” branches, where “outstanding staff, even when very busy” (which is to say always) preside over “borderline hectic” conditions with great verve and efficiency. The “slightly different Indian food” (“with spice rather than heat”) is “far better than it has any right to be” given the volumes it’s served in… “superb”… “so consistent” and “extremely fairly priced” too. The “left field” breakfast menu is famous nowadays, and “awesome bacon and egg naan rolls” have “redefined what brekkie is all about” for many Londoners. Founded in 2010, they will hit six branches in London in 2022, with a big (355 covers) new Canary Wharf outlet, complete with a bar and terrace overlooking the docks. On the downside, bookings at all the outlets are restricted and “queues are half way down the street”. “It’s worth it though!!”. Top Menu Tips – “Finally got to try the black dal… a big hug in a bowl” that’s “to die for” and “Ruby Murray is a family favourite”. And, with their burgeoning delivery business, “the fact you can now order the Bacon Naan for home consumption is a wonderful, wonderful thing”.
17. India Club, Strand Continental Hotel
Indian restaurant in Covent Garden
143 Strand - WC2
“Good scruffy fun with a side order of nostalgia” is to be had at this “hidden gem” in the Strand (a favourite with staff at the Indian High Commission opposite). “An almost anonymous doorway leads you up some stairs” where you “step back in time, not to a cheesy incarnation of the British Raj, but to the early days of independence”. Founded in 1951 (Prime Minister Nehru was among the founding members), the ‘club’ is open to the public and serves food that can be (but is not invariably) “excellent” at a “great price”, in an authentically “slightly chaotic atmosphere”. It’s been under siege for the past five years from a landlord itching to redevelop, but it’s “an institution that deserves to survive, and an oasis of good value in central London”. Top Tip – it’s unlicensed – “pause for a drink in the bar downstairs before or after eating” or carry your pint to the table.
18. Lahore Kebab House
Pakistani restaurant in Whitechapel
2-10 Umberston St - E1
“Still the best authentic Pakistani grilled meat and curry” is to be had at this grunge-tastic Whitechapel legend of 50 years’ standing, where “tastes are genuine” and prices “cheap as chips”. Top Menu Tip – “love the lamb chops”.
19. Tayyabs
Pakistani restaurant in Whitechapel
83 Fieldgate St - E1
“You come to eat, not dine” at this “loud and popular” 500-seater, which “lives up to its reputation as the go-to curry house in (well, near to) Brick Lane”. Top Menu Tip – “the lamb chops are meatilicious and the dry meat curry is rich and very tasty”; BYO.
20. Sagar
Indian restaurant in Covent Garden
31 Catherine St - WC2
“Very tasty dosas” headline the “wide range of delicious, South Indian vegetarian dishes”, “with many unusual choices” at this “unassuming-looking” small chain, whose most central branch is just off Leicester Square. “The food is good enough even to silence grumbling carnivores like me!”
