An “excellent Sunday lunch in the garden room” followed – after a decent pause – by “top scones and cakes” for afternoon tea are the kinds of occasion at which this boutique hotel, overlooking Jesmond Dene, excels. For a full meal in the ‘Fern’ dining room – which serves an à la carte menu – feedback remains more limited and somewhat mixed.

A former stomping ground of overachieving North East chef Terry Laybourne – this “smart” boutique hotel overlooking Jesmond Dene certainly provides a “lovely setting for a special occasion” – most particularly afternoon tea. As of 2018, Danny Parker (ex-of starred Newcastle venue House of Tides) took over chef duties from longtime former incumbent Michael Penaluna, but feedback on more serious fare is still very mixed (eg “food OK, but not value for money”).

For 32 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
