Harden's survey result
Summary
It’s “always a pleasure” to visit this plush hotel, where the more relaxed, pavement-side Brasserie is “great for lunch” in “beautiful surroundings”; and where you’ll be looked after by “attentive staff with an eye for detail” – whether you’re after “casual dining (homemade soup and roll are delicious)” or an “à la carte menu (fish dishes are good)”. For the Grosvenor’s famous afternoon tea, head to the plush Arkle Bar & Lounge.
Summary
In the shadow of the Eastgate clock, this streetside brasserie makes rather a glamorous, if not inexpensive, lunch-stop after retail therapy in the surrounding streets. It’s far plusher than is typical in a small town hotel. At afternoon tea, head to the Arkle Bar: “a real treat for you and your partner, or for that matter your mum!” – “a delightful, special, if expensive” experience “in luxurious surroundings, with fantastic pastries and cakes: what more could a girl want?”.
Summary
“Hotel brasseries don’t usually hold much appeal”, but this “big, slightly blingy, and certainly buzzing” operation provides an unusually high level of polish for a venue in a small provincial city. The food? – from a “fairly standard” menu some reporters feel results are “terrific”, but others say “while prices weren’t awful, I expected more from the place, so the bill felt like it was heavy without delivering”. Top Tip – “fabulous afternoon tea in beautiful surroundings”.

For 32 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

La Brasserie, Chester Grosvenor Restaurant Diner Reviews
"Eaten here many times in the past, results have been up and down & food standards unreliable. This year, much improved… £35 set 3 course lunch Christmas menu.. all dishes cooked to perfection (particularly scallop starter & salmon main). Desert a medley of coconut and lime snowball, with spiced rum & very tasty chewy dried pineapple. Excellent "
