“As good as the London three star Michelin-rated restaurants”, say advocates for this august dining room, in a plush five-star near the Tower of London (which already holds two of the tyre man’s gongs). Run from afar by Anne-Sophie Pic (Michelin’s most decorated female chef, and owner of Maison Pic south of Lyon), it flies a little under the radar in terms of its local profile, but is perennially hailed in reports for its “exquisite cuisine and exemplary, un-clichéd service”. Even those boosting it, though, note its heart-stopping bills, and it was more often judged as “overpriced” this year.

“Spectacular setting and superb cuisine” – not, in truth, what you might expect in a “plush” five-star popular with City expense-accounters, but what is delivered by the Pic family’s admirable dining room, within the majestic building that was once the HQ of the Port of London Authority. “The cookery is on another level – it’s beguiling and enchanting with perfume-like layers of aromas and flavours that show the most delicate touch and incredible execution”: some of the most highly rated in London. Service, meanwhile, is “refined” but “friendly” and the grand setting “manages to feel relaxed and modern whilst being a temple of excellence”. The bill is gargantuan, but nobody seems to mind.

“A truly world-class representative of London dining” – the Pic family’s “plush” three-year-old, within a monumental five-star hotel (the Port of London Authority’s former HQ), provides a “stunning-if-pricey” destination that nowadays ranks in London’s culinary top tier; and its heart-of-the-city location by Tower Hill makes it a natural for wining and dining particularly important prospects. The “calm, white-walled dining room” provides a “chic” and “beautiful” setting for a meal, service is “attentive but un-pushy”, but its highest rated feature is its “sensational”, “superbly refined” modern French cuisine.

For 32 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"Have been a huge fan of La Dame de Pic and this was my sixth visit but the food was hugely disappointing. We chose the tasting menu and all the courses were disappointing. The sweet breads were luke warm and tasteless, the turbot was anaemic and the Tarte Tatin was a huge disappointment - expecting a warm pastry classic it was a little shortbread with some apple compote on top. We went for the “Emotional” wine pairing which was excellent - innovative and interesting with a great sommelier. Two of the four of us went for the non-alcoholic pairing. What at first seemed a novel and innovative idea turned out to be the biggest disappointment of the night. Several of the drinks were almost undrinkable because of the cider / vinegar elements in them. Please bring Anne Sophie Pic back to the kitchen to restore the reputation of this great restaurant. "

"This is such an accomplished menu in a beautiful location. Of course, it is not cheap but I really highly recommend it. I thought that it was as good as the Paris venue which has one more michelin star. The january menu had a lot of citrus flavours which made for some fantastic combinations."
