With its big, high-ceilinged basement restaurant looking out onto a cool sunken garden – this style-conscious Shoreditch hotel (launched in 2017) never felt like it fully established itself fully prior to the pandemic. It closed from 2020 till June 2022, just after the conclusion of our survey, so our rating will have to wait till next year.

Still establishing itself pre-pandemic, this svelte Shoreditch Hotel – whose big, high-ceilinged Japanese-inspired dining room is in the basement, looking out onto a stylish, sunken garden – has never fully reached its stride, although it did inspire the odd “brilliant” report. As of September 2021, the hotel has yet to re-open post lockdown and its website reads: “we expect to reopen in late 2021. Please continue to visit our site for updates”.

In the basement of this very boutiquey, year-old Shoreditch hotel – London’s first from the global Japanese-American chain – the big, airy dining room opens onto a small sunken garden. To fans, its sleek styling, wizard sushi and “perfect cocktails” make it “pricey but worth it for a special blow-out”. To sceptics, though, it’s all a bit ‘vieux chapeau’: “for what it is – an old formula with nothing innovative – it’s overpriced; and you can have much better Japanese elsewhere at a fraction of the bill”.

For 32 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
