Harden's survey result
Summary
“Still impressive, reinventing itself and going strong!” – David Moore is the “warmest of hosts” and his exceptional Fitzrovian townhouse has been at the vanguard of London’s dining scene for three decades now. “Many chefs pass through his patronage” – the current incumbent being Asimakis Chaniotis, whose “surprising” and “fabulously flavoursome” dishes include the option of one of London’s foremost vegan tasting menus: “particularly impressive, imaginative and fun – even carnivores don’t miss the meat!” It’s not a huge site, but clever conversions over the years have created a “comfortable” and “lively” space (with a chef’s table and bijoux private dining room on the upper floors). There were a couple of ‘off’ reports this year, of the “maybe-I-caught-it-on-a-bad-night” variety. But all-round raves remain the norm here: “I have been coming to this restaurant for over two decades and have never failed to be delighted!”. Top Tip – “the vegan feast was a highlight of lockdown” and has continued as a home delivery option – “a wide range of delicious dishes, all with tantalisingly deep flavours”.
Summary
“David Moore is an absolutely charming host” and – having kept his foodie temple in a Fitzrovia townhouse at the pinnacle of London’s dining scene for the last 30 years (he launched at roughly the same time as Harden’s) – “he certainly knows how to keep up with the times with his constantly evolving menu and restaurant offerings”, most notably of late, one of London’s most ambitious vegan menus. Head chef, Asimakis Chaniotis delivers “fascinating dishes with fabulous ingredients” – “sheer class” – and there’s a heavyweight wine list “with some really interesting suggestions”. “The truly personal service seems unfazed by the stresses and shenanigans of recent times” and creates a “first class ambience” in the compact space.
Summary
David Moore’s illustrious Fitzrovian “continues to shine” under the tenure of head chef Asimakis Chaniotis, and this “elegant” townhouse remains one of London’s foremost temples of gastronomy. “Letting Chef Chaniotis take you through an evening with a custom tasting menu is second to none” – “he really is a master of meat, but they have great vegetarian and vegan tasting menus too”, and “there’s always something new and exciting” to sample. “An impressive wine list and a great sommelier’s intelligent recommendations” complete the formula. The proportions of the building are not expansive, but tables are “well-spaced” and the overall experience is an “intimate” one.

For 32 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

Pied à Terre Restaurant Diner Reviews
"Since out last visit, new chef and standards maintained but portions smaller. This may due to the menu approach offering 4 (lunch only) to 10 courses from the same list. That means if you go for the 4 courses (£65) you get the same size portions as would be appropriate for 10 courses. That just doesn't work as the portions are delicious and interesting but frustrating small - one taste and its gone! That heavens for lots of lovely bread otherwise we would have been hungry. Frustrating really as we do not want large meals but here you need resign yourself to at least 6 courses at £85. Probably worthwhile for the quality. 10 courses costs £140 and if you add the wine flight another £110 to £450!! The service is attentive and the sommelier always happy to chat. They did mess up our order a little and forgot some of the presentation work. It is good to see that they have reduced the focus on vegan food which had seemed to be exclusive. We love vegan but would not pay these prices for that, well not yet. We are not met eaters and you can mix the menus ( the former vegan one is called "plant based" ) to avoid meat but enjoy fish so that works better. We went as an anniversary and they kept saying nice things and embellished the final course of sweets with a few words in chocolate. "
"As usual the food was outstanding. The staff are attentive and its quiet there so you can talk. "
"We spotted that we were close to Pied a Terre, so we popped in for lunch. The food was good, although with fewer outstanding courses than when we have eaten there previously. A lot of bread was served with the meal, with new bread turning up for at least three courses, which seemed a little strange (and wasteful, as there was no way that anyone could have eaten so much bread with their meal). We came away well fed, but not with the endorphin high that we have previously experienced when eating here. "
