This “fun” Portobello pizzeria is “made by the excellent location” and has a less-commented-on twin in the equally funky post-industrial setting of Shoreditch’s ‘Tea Building’. Fans reckon it’s “still the one to beat” for “great pizzas”, nibbles and a small menu of dishes baked in the wood-fired oven, along with “one of the best Bloody Marys in town”; critics say the “food has lost a little sparkle from a couple of years ago”.

The “excellent Italian/American menu” means these “very buzzy”, industrial-style venues in Shoreditch (a former tea factory) and Portobello offer “much more than their consistently great pizzas”. They “can get busy, so book – especially on Fridays” and note: this is “not the place for a quiet romantic date”. A third site in Kentish Town closed a couple of years ago, and the owners, Soho House, seem to be focused elsewhere, but the ratings are very strong in our latest survey.

“Big and still with a great buzz” – these “vibey”, industrial-style haunts, owned by the Soho House group, have won an impressive following with their “inventive pizzas” (lots of them meaty), grungy-cool styling and staff who – despite a fair dose of hipster cred – maintain a welcoming attitude. Its ratings came off the boil a little in the last survey, though, and the odd reporter feels their performance is seeming more “tired”.

For 32 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
