“Now reopened and feels like it has never been away” – this local landmark (LS Lowry’s favourite, dating from 1872) has emerged unchanged in its essentials from a recent refurb which included the addition of some outside tables. “Pubby in the bar, and comfortable in the restaurant, with pleasant service, the traditional northern English food (such as Corned Beef Hash) is well cooked and very enjoyable, though not something to eat every day if you’re planning to live long and prosper!”

Plying its trade since 1872, this is a beloved local icon – much like LS Lowry, whose life-size bronze towers over the bar – owing to its superb, hearty British fare (the corned beef hash is a “heart attack on a plate, but what a way to go!”). As we went to press, it was closed for refurbishment (due to add outside space) with the reopening date uncertain, but their spin-off Mr Thomas's Chop House should help to tide over the gap. (In the meantime, we have retained their historical rating).

“LS Lowry at the bar” in the shape of a life-size bronze statue of Manchester’s greatest artist – and “local Lancashire grub: what more is there to say?” This stalwart institution has served up classic dishes and traditional hospitality since 1872. “The beef hash remains one of my favourites and I will have a heart attack halfway through it one day, I’m sure!”

For 32 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
