This scene-y Chinese operation from a Manchester-based chain is the signature restaurant of Oxford Street’s ‘The Now Building’ (newly opened near Centre Point, featuring giant digital video screens). It’s an Instagrammer’s dream, but reports are mixed on the culinary front: the “food looks sensational”, but is “overpriced” by a number of accounts and – although it may well find its market – foodies are likely to see it as an “example of how money and pretentions can go a long way”.

Summary

The largest deployment of video screens in the world will make it hard to ignore The Now Building – a new landmark venue, near Centrepoint – and its anchor restaurant will be this first London branch of the well-known northern chain, which provides a contemporary and extremely glossy Chinese experience that promises ‘a sensory journey from East to West’. In short, probably not a particularly foodie hotspot, but somewhere to go with Instagram at the ready.

For 32 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"Incredible food at a fantastic setting. This is definitely a star addition to the West End eating scene. It's expensive but it justifies the price for an occasional treat or special occasion. The menu is creative and works really well, the set menus offer a lot of food."
