Long a bastion of traditional fine dining in Bath, this luxury hotel was the first acquired by Andrew & Christine Brownsword almost 30 years ago, as they started to put together their portfolio of leading properties. Ratings have slipped in the past couple of years, though, with a high proportion of reports even from fans suggesting that “the prices are too much” for “food and service not at the level expected”. Damning critiques are absent, however – it’s a question of value.

Always a “lovely setting for a special meal”, this posh country-house hotel dining room is thriving under head chef Jauca Catalin, a former professional footballer in his native Romania who worked under the great Michael Caines at Bath Priory ten years ago and returned to the top post when Michael Nizzero left in 2020 – having “set a high bar to match”. Jauca has succeeded in spades, with “particularly good fish and meat offerings”“even eating here four nights in a row with four lunches, we never got bored and enjoyed every dish”. The dining room is also “booked out for weeks on end” for its “magnificent” afternoon teas, whose “sandwiches and cakes served on cake stands look a picture and taste divine”.

“Wonderful food is amply delivered” at this posh country house hotel, riding high after the arrival of Michael Nizzero in January 2017, and where “a tour of the (“fab”) grounds by the head gardener following a meal makes for a perfect celebration and reason to return”; casual sister restaurant The Pantry is also worth a look.

For 32 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
