“Quality locally sourced food” “in an excellent refurbished pub close to the Quayside” wins consistently high ratings across the board for this long-running collaboration (12 years and counting) between Terry Laybourne’s 21 Hospitality Group and the neighbouring Live Theatre, a theatre for new writing.

A collaboration between local luminary Terry Laybourne's 21 Hospitality Group and Live Theatre, a new writing theatre based nearby, this proper old-school ale-house isn’t aiming for the skies, but it does what it does – well-kept beer and bar food – very well indeed; a further boon – “the new outdoor terrace makes it even better!”.

“A great pub beautifully located on the Newcastle quayside near Live Theatre”, with “fantastic bar food, a class above other pubs and a cask beer selection to match”“the upstairs restaurant is also very popular”. This is a “consistently top-notch establishment” which provides a “great all-round drinking and dining experience” – but be warned: it can be “noisy”.

For 32 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
