Harden's survey result
Summary
“Tucked away among the terraces of Barnes’s cute ‘Little Chelsea’”, this “longstanding food pub” is these days rather more gastro than boozer, and attracts “local ladies who lunch with its tasty cooking”. “Dogs, kids and menfolk are equally welcome” – the latter two more in evidence at the weekend.
Summary
A “good neighbourhood gem” tucked down a side street in Barnes’s ‘Little Chelsea’ conservation zone, the Dog was taken over by a new team during lockdown, who have “nudged it towards the bistro end of the gastroboozer spectrum”. The food is definitely a grade or two better as a result, although it’s “less inviting for a couple of pints at the bar” – which makes it a “big favourite among Barnes ladies who lunch, who bring their men and children along at weekends”. There’s also a hip pizza-and-ice cream shack, the Doghouse, in the back yard.
Summary
This “hidden gem” in the cute ‘Little Chelsea’ enclave of Barnes is “awkward to find if you’re not a local, but that’s probably why it’s retained its character”. It changed hands last year, but seems to have held onto its rep as a “reliable gastropub” – you need to book for the “great Sunday lunch”. There’s outdoor seating in the backyard, and dogs and children are welcome.

For 32 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
