“If you like game, this is the place for you” – a “lively” City gastropub with a focus on “fabulous British food” led by game in season, spit-roasted suckling pig and rare-breed meat. Handy for pre-show dining for visitors to the neighbouring Barbican arts centre, and “great-value Sunday lunches too”.

“Amazing” British game in season is the USP at this City boozer next to the Barbican, which makes for some “great gastro evenings”. This is supplemented in the off-season (so March to July) by spit-roasted whole suckling pig, rare-breed meat and wild fish and seafood. It’s also a useful pre- and post-show dining option for concert- and theatre-goers at the Barbican Centre, five minutes’ walk away.

This game-themed gastropub next to the Barbican has a solid following for its “excellent game and seriously good local produce” from an “interesting and well-executed menu”. Clearly, it’s best to come in game season (August-February), but at other times the kitchen gets by on rare-breed beef, goat and seafood options, and an “amazing Sunday roast – pricey but worth it”. Arguably, the interior “doesn’t lift the spirits, but there’s a sheer lack of decent alternatives around the Barbican”.

For 32 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
