“A lovely spot to eat fantastic fresh Devon seafood, simply served and tasty every time” – this informal operation was originally an oyster farm where guests picnicked beside the Avon estuary. These days there’s a bar, but it’s still pretty basic.

“Fresh seafood, very well cooked” is the raison d’être of this low-key shack with a terrace that grew out of an oyster farm on the Avon estuary more than 30 years ago. Long-time owner Chris Yandell left four years ago, but the venture still ticks most boxes, especially as “a great al fresco summer experience”.

It’s not much more than a bright blue hut with a covered terrace, but the seafood on offer at this offbeat former oyster farm, set on the Avon estuary, has made it a known stop-off in this part of the world. Since the departure of longtime owner Chris Yandell in 2018, feedback on it has dwindled noticeably, but such as we have says it remains “consistently good”, with added marks for being “dog, child and everything friendly!”

For 32 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
