“Close to the centre of Oxford but a million miles away in atmosphere, at the end of the rural Binsey Lane”, this “delightful riverside gastropub” surrounded by Port Meadow is “a very special place”, complete “with elegant indoor dining and outdoor terrace, and also pub benches in the large garden with simpler food served from the ‘shed’”. “A lovely place for special celebrations and an excellent choice of dishes to suit all tastes.”

“What a find!” – an “idyllic” thatched pub with a dining conservatory of some pedigree (there’s been a boozer here for eight centuries), almost on the banks of the Isis, amidst beautifully bucolic Port Meadow. Former patrons C.S. Lewis and Inspector Morse would find the food “delicious” these days – and, owing to its location and extensive gardens, it's particularly in demand come summer (when most patrons opt for the casual, burger-only Shed Bar).

This famous thatched pub by Port Meadow, where the countryside encroaches into Oxford, is “lovely on a summer’s day for a meal outdoors” – and “highly recommended after a walk along the Thames if you’re staying in Oxford”. There has been a pub here for 800 years and the current building has hosted real and imaginary drinkers including Inspector Morse, C.S.Lewis and William Morris. Landlord Jon Ellse is from Oxford pub royalty – his father ran the Turf Tavern.

For 32 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
