“A window table gives a good view of the sunset on a sunny evening” at this “excellent seafront restaurant”: a seafood brasserie near the old West Pier that’s again one of the city’s commented-on destinations in town in our annual diners’ poll. Fans say it’s “hard to get into, and not cheap, but everything about it’s good” in particular its “great fish-based menu” (“it’s a great place to share a whole fish at market price”). “The scale of the restaurant can make the service a little frenetic” though and the food can “try too hard to be interesting and only sometimes succeed”. On most accounts, though, it’s “still knocking it out of the park and a great place for a treat”.

“The best terrace of any restaurant not directly on the beach, and serving some of the best fish in Brighton” – the twin key selling points of this successful and “friendly” seafood brasserie near the old West Pier: one of the most commented-on destinations in the city. If eating inside, “ask for a window table” (“most of which have views overlooking the seafront”) “as the lower level is rather charmless” by comparison. In a June 2021 review The Daily Mail’s Tom Parker Bowles acclaimed ‘a feast to sate Neptune’ here. Our reporters are only a tad more reserved, praising its “excellent fresh, tasty, well-cooked and beautifully presented seafood”.

“It's all about the fish” (“amazing” albeit “very expensive”) at this “great seafood brasserie in a lovely location on Brighton seafront” – although they also turn out “brilliant quality steaks” (with “sharing plates for two – fish or meat – a particular feature”). The venue elicits reams of feedback – amongst the highest quantity of any venue in town – all highly positive.

For 32 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"We are very fond of The Salt Room and find the food consistently very good, though we tend to be conservative in our menu choices (always fish and shellfish). Service is warm, friendly and professional. The wine list is very interesting and not unreasonably priced. The ambience is fine but perhaps looking a bit tired inside. Overall, a great seaside place to get reliable (in the best sense of that word) seafood. "
