An open-flame restaurant, part of the new 'container community' under the Tyne Bridge in Gateshead.
Harden's survey result
Summary
“Wood-fired wonders from one of Newcastle’s best!” – a “tremendous menu” of “raw-in-tooth-and-claw meat cooking over open flame” draws aficionados to this “wonderful location, right under the Tyne Bridge”. There’s “nothing here I could cook at home – many things I couldn’t even imagine. Risky, but it works!”
Summary
“Very good” reports again on this restaurant that’s part of the container village under the iconic Tyne Bridge, run by the ‘By The River Brew Co’. There’s also a covered terrace and outdoor market. Grills over open fire are at the heart of the menu, and there are many exotic local brews to wash down the food.
Summary
“Right on the banks of the Tyne, under the iconic Tyne Bridge, with some of the UKs best city views” – these “trendily laid-out, converted shipping containers” have “a fabulous setting” and are “quirky in every way”. “Start with a beer: there’s around 15 to choose from, many brewed on the premises, served in 1/3 and 2/3 measures (a good plan given the strength range, of 5%-10%)”. The food is “cooked in-view” in a ‘fiercely seasonal, open-fire kitchen’ and the fairly eclectic results are regularly outstanding: “mains were as good a meat as I’ve had. The Barnsley Chop was gargantuan, cooked with seafood (it works!). The whole lemon sole easily fed two, and was perfect”. The odd reporter does strike unlucky, though: “duck predicted as ‘tender’ wasn’t… steak and bone marrow was very salty yet vegetables were bland”.

For 32 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

Trakol Restaurant Diner Reviews
"Starters were pleasant, the cheese and onion custard a particular high. The mains were underwhelming; the asparagus salad only contained four spears; the plaice was slightly overcooked at the edges and under towards the centre, although the sauce was pleasant enough - I left loads. The rib of beef feasting platter was okay. We did leave quite a bit of food and the waiter did not pick up on this, we didn't go for dessert. We paid the bill and said we'd go outside for a few drinks to take in the Tyne and the city. We had one cocktail before the bar closed at 9:15 which was a shame. "
"Great cooking, trendy restaurant brilliant service "
"on the banks of the Tyne under the Bridge is Trakol, the concept is Tapas so dishes could arrive at differnet times if sharing, or at the same time is not. always changing menu, so i may never get to have the amazing meal we had.. Cured Brill in Horseradish mint sauce, one of the best chicken liver Pate/parfit, pigs tounge was a revelation and the Lamb was amazing, cittrus doughnuts and a cold ricr pudding with Honeycomb were lighter than they should have been atmos was great, quite dark but your table well accomodated, pricing was good, service was was just right, wine & drinks choice was all you needed, most bases covered. also seemed to have a good amount of walking space, i always recomend booking, can't wait for next time"
