A “Glasgow institution” in the city’s West End, established in 1971 by Ronnie Clydesdale and now run by his son Colin. It is “still a great place for food, atmosphere and good company”, whether in the main restaurant, the brasserie or one of its four bars. “Hadn’t been back for ages until this month – excellent” – although naturally there have been changes over the years, such as “the new tasting menu” showcasing top-class Scottish ingredients.

Colin Clydesdale’s “well-established” feature of forty years standing (founded by his father Ronnie in 1971) continues to draw fans to its large West End premises, with its very appealing and “romantic” decor, plus what fans acclaim as flavoursome modern Scottish cooking, backed up by a huge wine list and vast malt whisky selection. There is the odd critic who says “I used to love the ‘Chip’, but nowadays it’s living on borrowed time”… then again, people have been saying that for the last twenty years!

“Still with a buzz about it” – this sprawling West End legend is fast approaching its 40th anniversary and still manages to be both “different and classical”. Its many fans agree that it’s “wonderful for both food and environment”, not to mention its bible of a wine list and “awe-inspiring malt whisky selection” (of which “the staff have a remarkably broad and deep knowledge”). Now run by Colin Clydesdale, son of founder Ronnie, the ‘Chip’ has a more casual brasserie upstairs.

For 32 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
