Harden's says

After the UK's largest restaurant crowdfund (over £200,000 raised in just 28 days), Gary Usher - of Burnt Truffle, Sticky Walnut and Hispi - will be opening this new Liverpool bistro in October 2017. An astonishing start to what promises to be another successful venture from Usher; a fundraising launch-night meal from Tom Kerridge sold out in 15 minutes.

“Good quality cooking and ingredients” and “wonderful helpful staff who never intrude” keep everything ticking over nicely at the Liverpool outpost of chef-entrepreneur Gary Usher’s Elite Bistros operation, which opened five years ago on the strength of a £200,000 crowdfunding drive. It has a “limited menu, but done well”, which helps keep costs from spiralling.

“Gary Usher just gets it right” – with his “high-standard” bistro cuisine at prices most reporters find reasonable (and despite the name, this is not a seafood specialist). “Cooking and service remained a delight” through the Covid restrictions, so “Wreckfish managed to recreate the special-meal-out feeling”. The worst criticism? – “I still don’t understand the undressed romaine lettuce leaves that accompanied the tender and sweet pork chop”!.

“Another of Gary Usher’s fabulous bistros” is a typical take on this “great addition to the city-centre”: a stylishly refurbished three-year-old (formerly a derelict workshop), in the city’s merchant quarter, that’s nowadays the city’s most-mentioned eatery. Its gutsy, affordable fare is generally well-rated, but ratings sipped a notch this year on some more middling reports (“good in parts…”, “good but expected more…”, “prices are slightly high even if everything they do, they do well…”)

“Another of Gary Usher’s fabulous bistros” is a typical take on this “great addition to the city-centre”: a stylishly refurbished two-year-old (formerly a derelict workshop), in the city’s merchant quarter, that’s nowadays the city’s most-mentioned eatery. Its gutsy, affordable fare is generally well-rated, but ratings sipped a notch this year on some more middling reports (“good in parts…”, “good but expected more…”, “prices are slightly high even if everything they do, they do well…”)

For 32 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
