Plant-based versions of comfort-food classics such as black-bean burgers and “interesting mac’n’cashew cheese” are menu highlights at this pair of meat-free cafés, out to prove that vegan dining has graduated from shabby to chic. Its menu of plant-based borrowings from cuisines around the world impresses even the occasional carnivore – “I forget I’m not vegan!”

Despite the ironically red-blooded name, this pair of ‘plant-based’ cafés in smart Chelsea and Marylebone are “favourites for vegetarian food so well prepared you hardly notice the lack of meat”. Their “tasty food covers all bases”, including vegan versions of such comfort-food classics as burgers and mac’n’cheese, with borrowings from Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and Oriental cuisines.

“Never thought vegan food could be so guilt-inducing!”: this self-consciously decadent plant-based two-year-old – under ex-Vanilla Black chef Franco Casoli in a “lovely” mews off Sloane Square – is “just a damn good restaurant in many ways… unlike many other vegans that seem to equate vegan food with a depressing ambience!”. “The only grumble is the need to go downstairs to order”.

For 32 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"Food is distinctly average for a vegan, and below for a non-vegan. Annoying that all the plant milk is pre-sweetened, so can’t even get a decent coffee. "
