Skal took over the Grade II listed building vacated by Rok in late 2019, and continues the Scandi theme, with weekday smo?rrebro?d and traditional Nordic recipes ("but with a modern, seasonal twist") from head chef Lauri Hilli (formerly of Sanctum Soho); SKÅL means ‘cheers’ in Swedish.

This “small” Swedish restaurant in Islington serves “amazing”, “absolutely delicious” meals based around Nordic ‘husmanskost’, meaning home cooking. It took over the Grade-II listed premises vacated by fellow-Scandi Rök (RIP) three years ago, making for an easy transition for locals with a taste for the north.

With a name meaning ‘cheers’ in Swedish, this Islington restaurant took over the Grade II site vacated by Rok (RIP) in late 2019, and continues the Scandi theme set by its predecessor. ‘Traditional Nordic recipes but with a modern twist’ are underpinned – they say – by the term ‘husmanskost’ meaning 'traditional home-cooked food’ (yes, there are meatballs…). “We tried this place after months of walking past. So glad we did. Great Nordic fish dishes, and on Sundays a surprising and delicious take on the classic British roast. Friendly and knowledgeable staff, in a bijou dining room which is nevertheless larger than it looks.”

For 32 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"Short menu . Starters more interesting than main courses. Very few wines by the glass to chose from. "
