Breaking news

March 2022: apparently the restaurant has been closed for two years. For some reason noone PR'd that fact, but the fact that it has reopened after an "inevitable" closure has been much publicised.

Bearing no resemblance to the ‘Connaught Grill’ in operation from 1955-2000 (nowadays, the space occupied by Hélène Darroze), this relative newcomer opened in early 2020, closed for much of the pandemic, then re-emerged in April 2022 (too late for much feedback in our annual diners’ poll). Occupying a newly converted area within the hotel, the sleek interior – with much bespoke woodwork – is a world away from the ‘period piece’ style of its former namesake. Likewise the menu, overseen by NYC chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten and much of it produced from the rotisserie and a wood-burning grill. Where, in its former incarnation, you might have enjoyed Consommé ‘Prince of Wales’, followed by Médaillons de Cailles ‘Belle Epoque’, now you can have Heirloom Tomato Salad followed by grilled Japanese Sirloin Black Beef.

Although it is branded under the famous ‘Connaught Grill’ name – which ran from 1955-2000 and was presided over for 26 of those years by the legendary Michel Bourdin – this new dining room, which opened in early 2020, is a total break from the past. With Hélène Darroze occupying the Grill’s old site, this reincarnation inhabits former private rooms elsewhere on the ground floor. John Heah’s sleek design for the interior – with much bespoke woodwork – is a world away from the ‘period piece’ decor of the former grill. The same could also be said of NYC chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s menu, much of it produced from the rotisserie and a wood-burning grill. Where, in days of yore, you might have enjoyed Consommé ‘Prince of Wales’, followed by Médaillons de Cailles ‘Belle Epoque’, you can now have Sashimi, followed by Wagyu Beef Fillet.

For 32 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
